Last year?s screening of the Parrish was such a success that this year, the Historical Society of Glastonbury will be showing TWO classic movies under the stars at our rustic restored tobacco shed. On Friday, August 14th (rain date Saturday, August 15th) Samuel Goldwyn?s The Best Year?s of Our Lives will be shown. Released shortly after World War II this 1946 movie depicts three WWII veterans who return home to small-town America to discover that they and their families have been irreparably changed. Critically acclaimed as ?an engrossing look at the triumphs and travails of returning WWII veterans,? this movie won seven academy awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Frederic March) and Best Supporting Actor (Harold Russell). At the time, it also was the highest grossing and best attended movie in this country and the UK since ?Gone with the Wind.? August 15th marks the 70th Anniversary VJ (Victory in Japan) Day and hence the conclusion of WWII. In celebration of the anniversary, the Historical Society will honor Glastonbury WWII veterans before the movie. All Glastonbury WWII veterans are encouraged to attend the honoring ceremony. Friday, August 28th (rain date Saturday, August 29th) is the Historical Society?s family night and the 1949 film A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur?s Court will be featured. This comedy is based on Mark Twain?s novel and features acting and music by Bing Crosby and Rhonda Fleming . This film was one of the highlight films of 1949. So bring the kids for a musical romp back in time from the pen of Connecticut?s own Mark Twain. These events are open to everyone! So bring a chair, blanket, popcorn, maybe some bug spray and join us for two evenings that will be most memorable. Each movie begins at sunset (8:00pm). A suggested $10.00 donation is welcome. You may reserve a spot in advance or just show up.
