Approximately 1 in 10 adults in the U.S. report experiencing depression. Depression can be costly and debilitating to sufferers. It can adversely affect the course and outcome of common chronic conditions, such as arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Depression also can result in increased work absenteeism, short-term disability, and decreased productivity. This presentation has been designed foster an understanding of the differences between sadness, grief and clinical depression. We will explore the biology of depression and discuss benefits and risks of the major types of treatment.
